This year due to COVID new grads may face the worst job market since 2008 financial crisis. Many had to cancel their graduation ceremony or have it postponed. It is definitely not the kind one dreamed of. Here is an inspiring message for all who are graduating or have graduated this year! From Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai for the graduating class of 2020.
“Be open, be impatient, be hopeful. If you can do that, history will remember the Class of 2020 not for what you lost, but for what you changed'”
"So take the time to find the thing that excites you more than anything else in the world. Not the thing your parents want you to do. Or the thing that all your friends are doing. Or that society expects of you."
Just to add my thoughts on this:
Some of the students who I have mentored were looking for work at the start of 2020 full of hope. Many of these people have good skills, some even have experiences from overseas. One of my student have gone through 8 interviews and close to getting an offer. Then the lock down happened and rest is history.
Listening to talks from people like Sundar brings perspective, since 2020 is only a year in ones life time and a drop in the vast span of time. What matters most is the era we live in. Looking at how far we've come and how much we have achieved till this point for you and for me.
Lastly I feel the hope and duty of this generation is not to rebuild or reboot this world, but to create a better world according to our imagination of the future.
